THE RETRO THEORIES

CYCLE OF EROSION --THE PAST'S EVOLUTION

"Time heals things" they said,it heals theories too. Some faded theories from the past which led to the development of modern theories are brought to you here. The cycle of erosion is one such theory which was very popular in its initial stages but later faced a lot of criticism due to its incomplete explanation and foresight into the subjects of the theory. The mastermind behind this theory, William Morris Davis divided this theory into stages with a gradual transition. The first stage being the youthful stage.

THE YOUTHFUL STAGE

It all starts in the youthful stage where a land mass is uplifted or to be uplifted.
During the youthful stage, the height difference between the two uplands and the valley bottoms rapidly increases cause of the river incision. River incision plays an important role in the youthful stage as it carves the lands with a narrow erosion in the stream or the river far from its base level. The youthful stage then evolves further to the mature state.

THE MATURED STATE

In the matured state, the height difference between uplands and the valley bottoms reach their maximum level. And in this state, the slope phenomenon would become more crucial.
The uplands loose height more rapidly than the river incise. At a particular stage during his research, the erosion has acted so long that the highlands turned into rolling lowland and that is called a peneplain.

THE SETBACKS

This theory faced a lot of criticism in its initial days as it was a major hit back then.
This theory wasn't able to make its mark in Germany.
As this theory gained popularity with the lucid writing of William Morris Dave
It accumulated a lot of criticism.
The notions of time, slope, uplift and the drainage density evolution in the erosion cycle have been questioned. The validity of some whole concepts such as steam grade, base level and majorly the concept of Penelope was questioned. Here are the words of a geomorphologist,
Ronald Flemal summarizing the situation,

Currently, geomorphologists are divided into three camps: those who still adhere to Davisian concepts, either in the original or the modified form: those who desire to replace Davisian ideas by a different cycle of erosion; and those who completely reject the cycle of erosion completely.

Despite facing a lot of criticism this model still remained in the geology as it is neither proved wrong nor right

A lot of concepts such as this one helped us in the development of our present technology and focus on the research for the future.
And a lot of people are working to promote the teaching of such theories as they were the first steps of research for the productory experience we're enjoying today.
Let's try remembering more of them in the next one.
What do you think about such theories guys??
Do you think they should be still taught as the base of research or should be neglected for not presenting appropriate reasons?
Let's get this on in the comments!!
